Currently nobody can imagine the holidays without holiday tree and Christmas carols. But does anyone know where did those customs come from?
The history of Christmas tree
The tradition of Christmas tree comes from Germany. In the 16th century German Christians brought into their houses the decked trees. Somebody was built Christmas pyramids and decked them with lights and evergreens. Lights was hunged on a holiday tree by Martin Luther in the same time. Inspiration for candles appears during walking. Martin Luther one winter evening noticed light of stars twinkling between plants.
Holiday tree in American culture
Only a few know that majority of 19th century Americans treated Christmas trees as crankiness. The first information about Christmas tree in that region appeared in 1830s and say about settlers from German as a proprietors of holiday tree. Some hold that the Pennsylvania German settlements decorated Christmas trees as early as 1747. But, in the 1840s holiday trees were treated as pagan symbols and they weren’t approved by majority of American citizens.
The tradition of carols
The word „carol” in fact means dance or a song of joy and praise. In the past carols were songs of pagans those were sung during Winter Solstice celebrations when members of event danced round circles of stone. Christians inspired pagan customs and prepared songs for Christian. In 129 the song „Angel’s Hymn” was popular and sung at a Christmas celebrations in Rome. Other Christmas hymn was created in 760 by Comas from Jerusalem. Then more and more composers all over the Europe try to writting Christmas songs. But the most of Christmas songs was written in Latin and because of that a lots of people were not intrested in singing holiday carols.
Christmas tree and holiday carols are beautiful traditions those are worth continued from generation to generation. The knowledge about long-standing history of Holiday tree and Christmas songs makes them more amazing.
